Ind. restaurant wants to keep 28-foot-tall rooster

LIBERTY, Ind. — A restaurant owner in a small eastern Indiana town might soon be forced to take down a 28-foot tall-rooster sign meant to promote his menu’s fried chicken.

Liberty Bell owner Andy Pitcher tells WLWT-TV that since the sign went up this spring many people have had pictures taken in front of it in the Union County town of Liberty.

But county planning director Jeff Mathews tells the Palladium-Item that he’s received several complaints about the sign and it is too close to the street for county zoning codes.

Pitcher says he was out for knee-replacement surgery when restaurant employees had the wood-and-metal sign built to draw attention while traffic was diverted during a street project.

A county zoning board is scheduled to consider the sign’s fate on Monday.
