Sixty families choose to change Dist. 204 schools
The halls at Longwood and Georgetown elementary schools will be slightly less crowded when the doors open Thursday morning.
Indian Prairie Unit District 204 officials said Wednesday afternoon that a total of 60 students, or 5 percent of the two schools’ total enrollment, have opted to move to Clow or Kendall elementary schools. The students were split almost evenly between the two schools.
The district was forced to offer parents at Georgetown and Longwood elementary schools the choice to transfer because the schools failed to make the federally mandated Adequate Yearly Progress for the third consecutive year.
Last year, the district was required to offer supplemental services to students at each school that fell short of No Child Left Behind standards for the second straight year.
Under No Child Left Behind, 85 percent of students in every subgroup needed to meet standards in 2011 and 2012.
Janet Buglio, spokeswoman for District 204, which covers portions of Naperville, Aurora, Plainfield and Bolingbrook, said parents were given an Aug. 22 deadline but acknowledged families were free to choose where to enroll up until the first day of school.
