St. Charles woman, 20, missing since Monday

A 20-year-old St. Charles woman who left her home about noon Sunday was last seen in Chicago’s Millennium Park Monday but has not been seen or heard from since.

Tanner Conroyd’s father, Frank, thought his daughter might have been heading to Illinois State University, where she was a student, when she left after an argument with family members. Police say Conroyd had not enrolled for fall classes yet.

Conroyd had been on campus in Normal for a few weeks instructing music students but voluntarily admitted herself to a hospital Saturday at the request of her roommates. Her father said he met her at the hospital Saturday night, but she checked out at 4 a.m. Sunday. She said she wanted to go back to her apartment, but once she fell asleep in her father’s vehicle, he drove her back to St. Charles.

When Tanner Conroyd woke up in St. Charles Sunday morning, she packed the car and abruptly left by somehow starting a family vehicle without any keys, according to her father, who said he had both sets in his pocket.

Records showed that Tanner Conroyd purchased gas in Sugar Grove at 1 p.m. Sunday, and about 1:30 p.m. she was seen at the Brown Pub in Hinckley, where it is believed she stayed there for about three hours because of car problems. Conroyd’s 1995 Ford Crown Victoria was found near the Brown Pub Wednesday but appears to have been there since Sunday, according to the Kane County sheriff’s office. Conroyd also left her wallet at the gas station.

Detectives said that Conroyd took a train into Chicago from an Aurora station.

While in Millennium Park Sunday night, two or three men tried to steal Conroyd’s guitar from her, but she fought them off and called security.

The guard saw Conroyd as the park was closing about 10:30 p.m. Sunday and took down her cellphone number to make sure she got home OK. Conroyd gave the guard her number, but she had left her phone in her apartment in Normal on the ISU campus, according to her father.

Conroyd’s family had driven to the campus when she went missing Sunday and collected her cellphone. They had the phone when the guard called.

“He called to see that she had gotten home safely because he was worried about her,” Frank Conroyd said on Wednesday. “He said she’s got to be more careful. He was concerned.”

The Kane County sheriff’s office released a statement saying the investigating is ongoing and facts are subject to change as detectives interview people involved. The sheriff’s office has not ruled out foul play.

The sheriff’s department said Conroyd was seen again at Millennium Park Monday, but that was the last sighting.

Conroyd’s family and friends have been putting up missing person fliers throughout the city this week.

“This is as gut-wrenching,” Frank Conroyd said. “You don’t know anything about life and death until you are facing it.”

Tanner Conroyd is 5 feet 8 inches tall and approximately 150 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.

She was seen wearing a pink shirt with blue capri pants and gold-framed glasses. She is also believed to have been carrying a red guitar.

Her family has set up a Facebook page, Find Tanner Conroyd, with updates on the search.

Frank Conroyd said his daughter knows only one person who lives in Chicago, and she knew that the person was out of town.
