Sheriff temporarily covers Navy school:

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran says his deputies will cover a school at Great Lakes Naval Station because of a contract dispute. Curran said the sheriff’s office became available on the first day of classes Monday to Forrestal School at Great Lakes. He said plans are for deputies to handle any Forrestal calls through Wednesday. Curran said North Chicago police are contracted to cover Forrestal but indicated last Friday they wouldn’t respond to calls there because of a dispute with Great Lakes. Lake County Regional Schools Superintendent Roycealee Wood asked the sheriff’s office to step in and handle any calls at Forrestal so school could start on time Monday. Curran said he plans to meet with Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman on Tuesday on a potential course of action if the sheriff’s office is asked to include Forrestal in its coverage past Wednesday. Curran said the sheriff’s office doesn’t have the budget to provide free police service.
