Official: Suicide bomber kills 1 in south Yemen

Associated Press

SANAA, Yemen — A Yemeni security official says a suicide bomber blew himself up in the country’s south, killing a leading member of a civilian militia that has fought alongside government troops to drive out al-Qaida militants from their southern strongholds.

Another security official said Sunday that the death toll from Saturday’s attack on a government building in the port city of Aden rose to 21, after a soldier died of his wounds sustained when militants stormed the local intelligence headquarters.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

In a televised speech late Saturday, President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi pledged to fight terrorism and urged Yemenis to support his government as the country goes through a “dangerous and sensitive phase.”
