Bolingbrook man pleads guilty to drug charges

One of seven people arrested in a 2011 drug bust at a Glen Ellyn restaurant has been found guilty, prosecutors said Friday.

Alfredo Garcia, 36, of Bolingbrook was found guilty by a DuPage County jury on charges of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Undercover officers from the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group conducted the raid at La Playa Cantina, 690 Roosevelt Road, on July 28, 2011. Authorities said restaurant owner Venustiano Calderon tried to negotiate a $500,000 cocaine deal with the undercover officers, while Garcia and the five others acted as couriers, drivers and security.

The bust yielded a total of four kilos of cocaine with a total street value of $120,000.

Garcia faces a sentence of between 15 and 60 years in prison.

The cases of four of Garcia’s co-defendants — Calderon of Lombard, Luis Sanchez of Chicago, Oscar Colin of Cicero and Salma Sanchez-Hernandez of Cicero — are pending.

Two others, Marciano Diaz and Luz Vidal, both of Chicago, entered guilty pleas and have been sentenced, prosecutors said.
