The Fenton Community High School District 100 school board president resigned Wednesday to spend more time with her family, and now the district must appoint someone to fill the remainder of her term that ends in April.
Mimi Anderson said in her resignation letter that personal and family commitments were demanding her attention after nearly 10 years on the board. She was appointed to her seat in 2003, elected two years later and re-elected in 2009.
In addition to serving as board president, Anderson was vice president for four years and achieved Master Board Member status from the Illinois Association of School Boards. On the county level, Anderson served as vice president of the DuPage Division of the Illinois School Board Association.
“Mimi has given of herself unselfishly for a number of years and has been through many transitions on this board, including a 90 percent turnaround in the past five years or so,” board Vice President David Shimanek said. “She has always been consistent both diplomatically and reflectively. She asks the poignant questions. She does a great job and it’s going to sorely be missed.”
With Anderson gone as president, Shimanek will fill that role, according to District 100 policy.
Board members are now taking applications to fill her post and will vote on the appointment at their Sept. 24 meeting. They also will elect a new vice president that night.
Shimanek said the board is not seeking any specific specialties from candidates, except an enthusiasm to serve the Bensenville and Wood Dale communities.
“There are so many people out there who can serve and the biggest thing is we want people in the community participating,” he said. “I hope we get a great number of applications to chose from.”
Candidates must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen for at least a year, a resident of District 100 for a year prior to Sept. 24 and a registered voter.
Candidates should write a letter of interest, including a resume outlining qualifications related to serving on the board.
