Cary man sentenced to seven years

By Paul Biasco

A 60-year-old Cary man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to solicit a murder for hire, according to prosecutors.

Stanley J. Helmer was arrested in March 2011 on charges of attempted solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Helmer admitted attempting to recruit a felon to kill the victim or purchase a gun to shoot the victim, according to prosecutors.

“The court found that a sentence of probation would deprecate the serious nature of the offense,” the McHenry County sheriff’s office announced in a news release.

The case was a joint investigation handled by the Illinois State Police and the Oakwood Hills Police Department.
