There were few reasons for Toni Johnson to miss a day of work at Gifford Street High School in Elgin. Cancer certainly was not one. “She always said, 'As long as I got breath and I am able to walk up the stairs ... I am going to be there until the last day of school,” said Ken Arrington, assistant dean of students at Gifford Street. Johnson lost her 8-month battle with pancreatic cancer this month. She was 49.
