Ill. court to rule on inaction over possible abuse

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Supreme Court may clarify the duties of school officials who fear a teacher poses a sexual threat to students.

The case involves a teacher who was forced to resign from a job in Bloomington-Normal after viewing pornography on a school computer and being accused of inappropriate behavior with a student.

Officials with McLean County District 5 did not contact police or warn other schools about Jon White. He was hired in Urbana and later convicted of abusing eight girls there and two at his previous job.

Some families are suing the district for not taking action. But attorneys for the district say this case doesn’t meet the strict rules on when public officials can be sued.

The court is scheduled to rule Thursday.
