Cougars rally to beat River Bandits 5-3

Jorge Bonifacio broke out of an 0-for-24 slump with a tiebreaking double as the Kane County Cougars defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-3 on Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Bonifacio’s double down the left-field line came against reliever Jonathan Cornelius with two outs in the fifth, scoring Alex Llanos. Llanos had tied the score at 3-3 with a two-out single to score Kevin David.

David had walked to start the inning against Tyrell Jenkins (2-4), who lasted 4 innings and was pulled after Llanos’ single.

Tim Ferguson put the Cougars (53-53, 19-17) on top in the second on a double to deep center to score Dean Espy, who had doubled. Ferguson scored on a Yowill Espinal bloop single.

Angel Baez (6-3) was unable to keep the lead as he surrendered 3 runs to Quad Cities in the third inning.

Rudy Brown, Andrew Triggs and Malcom Culver (fifth save) strung together 4 scoreless innings out of the Cougars’ bullpen to close the contest.
