Chicago launches wellness program for workers

CHICAGO — The City of Chicago is starting a new wellness program that is being offered to more than 47,000 city employees and eligible spouses.

The program, managed by Tennessee-based Healthways Inc., is designed to promote a healthier workforce and keep health insurance costs down.

Employees and their spouses or domestic partners who are eligible but don't participate will pay an additional $50 a month for their health insurance.

Representatives from the city and many of its labor unions collaborated on the development of the wellness plan through the City of Chicago Labor Management Cooperation Committee.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel kicked off the program Friday by getting a health screening.
