Visitation for theater shooting victim from Crystal Lake is Friday

Funeral arrangements have been set for 27-year-old John Larimer, the Crystal Lake man who died of a gunshot wound last week while shielding his girlfriend from a gunman inside a Denver-area movie theater. A public visitation will be held Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at a Crystal Lake funeral home for the former U.S. Navy intelligence officer. Larimer is survived by both his parents and four siblings. Schaumburg man dies in crash on Route 53

A Schaumburg man died after striking the back of a semitrailer truck while driving on Route 53 near Higgins Road Tuesday afternoon. The 36-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are expected to identify the man this morning. Police said it was likely the driver did not notice that traffic had stopped in front of his SUV before he struck the back of the semi. ComEd: Some without power until Thursday night

Nearly 69,500 ComEd customers remained without power last night, after an early morning storm that knocked out power to more than 300,000 customers. The large-scale outage is the second for many in the Western suburbs this month. Tuesday’s storm produced winds in excess of 70 mph, forcing airlines to cancel 115 flights and delay hundreds more throughout the day. Today’s forecast calls for temperatures reaching 100 degrees, and a heat advisory is in effect. Full story.

Villa Park man charged with murder after Lombard fire kills woman

A 23-year-old Villa Park man accused of setting a fire that killed a woman inside a Lombard home is set to appear in bond court this morning. Police say Todd Mandoline set fire to the home at about 4 a.m. as the victim, Paula Morgan, a Villa Park man in his 20s and a young child were inside. Morgan died in the fire, but firefighters rescued the man while Morgan’s son managed to escape. Full story.

FBI: Elmhurst bank robbery was suspects’ fourth

A man and his two accomplices, who are already wanted in connection with three area bank robberies, are believed to be the same suspects who robbed an Elmhurst TCF Bank branch inside a Jewel-Osco Monday morning, according to the FBI. The suspects robbed the branch at 944 S. York Road just before noon and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police. Full story.

Weather

Hot, humid and a chance for scattered storms today, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory until 10 p.m.tonight. High temperatures are expected to cap out at 100 degrees today, with a heat advisory set to reach 105. Its only 72 degrees this morning, and will dip back to 77 degrees tonight. Full story.

Traffic

No major accidents to report early this morning, though people are urged to use caution when driving through Route 22 at Ela Road in Lake Zurich due to traffic light problems. People are also urged to avoid Burr Road between Bolcum Road and Silver Glen Road in St. Charles because of bridge replacement. That construction is expected to be cleaned up in August. Full story.

Bears GM says Super Bowl talk has to be earned

As the Chicago Bears descended on Olivet Nazarene University yesterday ahead of Thursday’s first team practice, the big questions of they day for general manager Phil Emery involved the words Super Bowl. “I think we’ve made progress, OK?” Emery said. “But to say a Super Bowl contender … it has to be earned on the field. Do we have good, talented players that can contribute toward a winning team and moving toward our goals to win a championship? Yes, we do.” Full story.

Sox move back into tie for first

Adam Dunn was 3-for-5 with a 2-run homer and 2-run double, while Paul Konerko was 4-for-4 with his second home run in as many games, to lead the Sox to an 11-4 win over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday. Thanks to their offensive exploits, the Sox (52-45) are tied with the Tigers for first place in the division. Full story.
