All views are needed on gay couples

I’m responding to Betty Biggerstaff’s June 12 letter reacting to the Daily Herald’s June 2 front-page article about a same-sex couple about to marry. I truly commend the Herald for their story. It made my day to read of these two fine gentlemen and how they found love and happiness despite the opinions of Ms. Biggerstaff.

This story was indeed big news. I believe the Herald served its readership well to look past the narrow scope of people like Ms. Biggerstaff, who refer to this couple derogatorily as “these two men.” These gentlemen were born with a sexual orientation that differs from Ms. Biggerstaff’s. They were created that way by the very God that she indeed should fear. Because they did not choose their sexual orientation, their rights should be automatically guaranteed in the Constitution.

It fascinates me that Ms. Biggerstaff says that God will punish the Daily Herald and that the Herald is forgetting God and shaking its fist at God. How does she know that? I believe that God’s plan is a mystery, and faith is our compass to guide us in that mystery. My faith tells me that God created people differently and those who accept, respect, and celebrate those who are different are those who truly embrace God’s words.

If that is, in Ms. Biggerstaff’s words, being on a slippery slope, then let me slide and slide some more. To the Herald, thank you for publishing Ms. Biggerstaff’s article and the wonderful front page story of the happy couple. By providing different views, you do not fail to disappoint. You fear God and tell the truth.

To the happy couple, I wish you a lifetime of health and joy together.
