Arlington Heights woman, Brookfield man sentenced for teacher’s murder
An Arlington Heights woman and a Brookfield man pleaded guilty Friday in a Maywood courtroom to charges of first-degree murder in the 2010 slaying of a retired Chicago Public Schools teacher in her Brookfield home.
A Cook County judge sentenced Bonnie Shelesny, of the 1300 block of Ridge Avenue, and Steven Kellman, of the 9000 block of West Sherman Avenue, to 35 years in prison in exchange for their guilty pleas to the murder of Marilyn Fay, 65, who worked part time at the Brookfield Public Library, according to published reports.
Fay was found on June 14, 2010, stabbed and suffocated inside her Brookfield home, where authorities say Kellmann was living at the time. Published reports say Fay befriended Kellmann, whom she met at the library and who helped her out with odd jobs.
Police located Kellmann, 32. and Shelesny, 25, at a South Side Chicago hotel two days after the murder. Officers arrested Kellman, who was out on bond on charges of aggravated driving on a suspended license at the time, published reports indicate. Police initially released Shelesny, a 2006 graduate of Hersey High School.
Authorities charged her with Fay’s murder about six months later.
Kellmann received credit for the 767 days he has spent in custody since his arrest. Shelesny received credit for 598 days in custody.
Kellmann and Shelesny must complete their full sentences before they are eligible for release.
