Cougars shut down 5-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Stifled on a season-low 2 hits, the Kane County Cougars were defeated 5-0 in the opener of a three-game series by the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Alejandro Segovia started the scoring for the Hot Rods (53-42, 15-10) in the bottom of the third as he blasted his 10th home run of the season against Kellen Moen (3-7) to lead off the inning.

Moen lasted 5-plus innings while surrendering just 4 hits. He did give up 1 more run in the sixth on an RBI single from Jake Hager to score Ryan Brett.

Jason Mitchell replaced Moen in the sixth and coughed up a two-out double to Todd Glaesmann before Jeff Malm ripped a 2-run homer, his 11th.

Mitchell only worked 1 inning before giving way to Andrew Triggs, who pitched the final 2. Triggs allowed an unearned run in the eighth as Hager reached on a Jack Lopez error before scoring on a single from Drew Vettleson.

Jake Floethe (9-1) got the start for the Hot Rods and limited the Cougars (48-47, 14-11) to just 1 hit in 5 innings of work. Floethe walked three and struck out just one but kept the Cougars off the board as did Jason McEachern in his 3 relief innings.

Stayton Thomas fired up a zero in the ninth inning to preserve the shutout as the Cougars never had a runner reach third base in the ballgame.
