North Aurora considers new lawn watering regulations

North Aurora is considering changing the dates and times water customers can sprinkle lawns.

The public facilities committee will discuss the matter at 7 p.m. Monday at village hall, 25 E. State St.

The village has not experienced any problems with supplying water during this drought, water superintendent Paul Young told the village board this week.

North Aurora water customers can use sprinklers from 6 to 9 p.m. daily.

The proposed change would establish authorize sprinkling for odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered days, and even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days. However, users would also be able to water from 6 to 9 a.m. on those days.

The idea is to smooth out peak water use, according to Young. He said that would put less stress on the system.

And some people have told him they would prefer to water in the morning. Among them are people who fear that having a damp lawn in the evening encourages disease, he said. Others would prefer to water in the morning, so they can use their lawns in the evening, he said.

The odd/even, morning-and-evening water restrictions proposed are similar to those of Batavia, Geneva, Aurora and Sugar Grove.

Lawn watering is discouraged during the middle of the day because it wastes water. The water evaporates more quickly than in the early morning or evening.
