Chicago plans $205 million in CTA rehab work

The Chicago Transit Authority plans a $205 million renovation of the agency’s bus and rail maintenance facilities.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool announced the initiative Tuesday. They said the construction will create more than 500 jobs while the project lasts.

Claypool said many of the facilities are in poor condition or outdated. He said in a news release that new 60-foot buses being added to the CTA fleet are too large for many of the city’s seven bus facilities to handle. One bus facility was built in 1903 and still has rails for street cars embedded in the floor.

Work on the facilities’ upgrade will start in 2013 and continue through 2015.
