New medical examiner named in Cook County

A pathologist who has led death investigations in Florida and Colorado has been named as Cook County’s new medical examiner.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle appointed Dr. Stephen Cina on Tuesday and asked the full board to confirm him to the position.

He’s tapped to replace Dr. Nancy Jones, who announced her retirement following accounts of bodies piling up and Preckwinkle’s announced intention to overhaul the office. Jones’ retirement is effective July 31.

Preckwinkle says Cina has the management know-how to “reshape the medical examiner’s office into a model facility.”

Cina is the chief administrator at the University of Miami’s Tissue Bank. The former Air Force major has been a deputy chief medical examiner for Broward County, Fla., and the medical examiner for Weld County, Colo.
