Sox’ Youkilis collects AL player of the week honors

Following his first homestand with his new team, White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been named American League Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

Youkilis hit .478 (11-23) with 3 home runs, 10 RBI, 7 runs scored, a .571 on-base percentage and .913 slugging percentage as the White Sox went 5-1 on a six-game homestand vs. Texas (3-0) and Toronto (2-1).

Youkilis led AL hitters in slugging, tied for the lead in RBI and was second in average, total bases (21) and on-base percentage. He hit safely and drove in a run in all six contests, including game-winning RBI in each game of the Rangers series and on Saturday against the Blue Jays.

In his first 13 games with the White Sox, Youkilis is hitting .347 (17-49) with 3 homers and 14 RBI since being acquired from Boston on June 24 with cash considerations in exchange for infielder Brent Lillibridge and right-hander pitcher Zach Stewart.

This is the second career weekly award for Youkilis, who won his first in May 2008 with the Red Sox.

It is the sixth AL honor received by a White Sox player this season. In addition to Youkilis, Paul Konerko (April 23-29 and May 21-27) and Philip Humber (April 16-22) were named AL Player of the Week, and Jake Peavy (April) and Chris Sale (May) won back-to-back AL Pitcher of the Month awards.
