Submitted by Geneva Underground Playhouse

The Geneva Underground Playhouse will open the musical “Assassins” beginning July 6.

The show, featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim, will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, July 6-21, and 3 p.m. Sundays, July 8-22. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors, 65 and older.

“Assassins” has music and lyrics by Sondheim, and a book by John Weidman. It is based on an idea by Charles Gilbert Jr.

Using the premise of a carnival game, the show is a revue-style portrayal of men and women who attempted to assassinate presidents of the United States. The musical first opened off-Broadway in 1990, and the 2004 Broadway production won five Tony Awards.

Community theater veteran Craig Gustafson is directing the GUP production, with musical direction by Kathleen Dooley.

The cast includes: Garrett Ard, Sean Ogren, Terry Foster, Carrie Dabelow, Harold LeBoyer, Meredith Higgins, Jaime Sandoval, Lars Timpa, Zach Gibson, Rod Kelly, Aimee Kennedy, Dean Sasman, Susan Barry, Pat Daly and Shane Frantz.

Tickets are on sale at the theater’s website, www.guptheatre.org, or by calling the box office at (630) 677-1725. If you reserve tickets over the phone, you may pick up the tickets at the box office before the performance and pay by check or cash. A credit or debit card can be used online.

The Geneva Underground Playhouse is a nonprofit community theater at 524 W. State St., the corner of Sixth and State streets in downtown Geneva.
