Stuck horse rescued from NW Ind. railroad bridge

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Several people worked to rescue a horse whose hoof was struck between wooden ties on a northwestern Indiana railroad bridge after it apparently was spooked by fireworks and ran off.

Authorities were able to stop an approaching freight train before it arrived Wednesday evening at the bridge in a rural area a few miles west of Valparaiso. The Times of Munster reports a woman driving past the bridge noticed the horse was stuck and alerted nearby residents.

Rescuers used nylon straps to pull the horse and plastic tables to keep it from putting another hoof through the ties. Owner Arjen Byvoets says the horse had broken loose about an hour before being spotted.

He says he bandaged the horse's leg, but didn't believe her injuries were serious.
