28-year-old drowns in Lake Villa lake

A 28-year-old Chicago man drowned while attempting to swim to shore from a boat in Lake Villa's Deep Lake Sunday afternoon.

Lukasz Barabasz was with friends on a boat near the center of Deep Lake when he told them he was a good swimmer and he was going to swim back to shore, according to police.

Barabasz's friends lost sight of him as they were rowing back to Jack & Lydia's Resort, but figured he had made it safely back, police said. Other members of the group who were on shore said Barabasz had never made it back and the friends got back in the boat to look for him, said Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Jim McKinney.

The friends found Barabasz' body just outside the resort's swimming area at about 1:15 p.m., McKinney said.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Barabasz to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
