Hanover Park man hit by train was going to work

The bicyclist fatally struck by an eastbound Metra train in Hanover Park Monday morning has been identified as 33-year-old Juan Cordero of Hanover Park.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said Tuesday that Cordero's mother told authorities that her son was on his way to his job at Denny's in Hanover Park when he was struck.

The collision remains under investigation. According to the engineer's report, however, Cordero didn't heed horn blasts from the train, Reile said.

The engineer reported that Cordero had been cycling eastbound ahead of the eastbound train and never appeared to look at the train before he turned into its path, Reile said.

Train No. 2208 was not scheduled to stop at the Hanover Park station but was heading straight on to Roselle when the collision occurred around 6:30 a.m. Monday.

The Cook County medical examiner's office has ruled the death an accident.
