Lance, an African spurred tortoise, has been missing from Lombard since Sunday. His owners, Susan and Andy Lechner, think someone may have taken Lance after he likely wandered to an apartment complex behind their home.

Susan Lechner looks over the pen in her Lombard backyard where her 45-pound, 44-year-old African spurred tortoise last was seen Sunday. The tortoise, named Lance, may have crawled under a fence between Lechner's yard and an apartment complex, she said.

About this Article

Susan and Andy Lechner's pets were a storybook pair: the tortoise and the hare. The Lombard couple's dwarf rabbit, Happiness, is safe, but Lance, a 45-pound, 44-year-old African spurred tortoise, has been missing since about 8 p.m. Sunday. "We don't have a good feeling that we couldn't find him right away," Susan Lechner said. "We're pretty sure he might have been stolen."
