Each summer, the Daily Herald sponsors the Giving Garden program where suburban gardeners can donate extra fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 50 local food pantries across Cook, Lake, Kane, DuPage and McHenry counties.

With the weakened economy, pantry officials across the suburbs are seeing the number of visits soaring, consequently they are relying on gardeners to help them provide nutritious fruits and vegetables to families struggling to make ends meet.
