Kernels combine to corral Cougars

Four Cedar Rapids Kernels hurlers combined for a 4-hit shutout in the Kernels’ 6-0 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Austin Wood (3-5) started for the Kernels (30-38) and worked 6 innings while limiting the Cougars (34-34) to just 4 hits.

Three of the Kane County hits came in the second when they loaded the bags on a string of singles. Kenny Swab was unable to come through though as he bounced into a 4-6-3, inning-ending double play.

Cedar Rapids grabbed the lead in the second against Andy Ferguson (0-1). Zach Wright singled with two outs and came around to score on a base hit by Kevin Moesquit. Two more unearned runs scored off Ferguson as he lasted 5 innings.
