An out-of-state man accused of possessing more than five pounds of methamphetamine in DuPage County was ordered held Thursday on $1 million bail.
Luis Martines-Corona, 34, appeared in bond court on drug possession and delivery charges.
Prosecutors said he was staying with a woman in a Burr Ridge hotel when police, acting on a tip, opened an investigation. They said officers later observed an exchange in which the defendant received a duffle bag. Police subsequently stopped him and found roughly 5½ pounds of methamphetamine, or 2½ kilograms, inside the bag, Assistant State's Attorney Bethany Jackson said in court.
Martines-Corona's address is listed in court records as St. Paul, Minn., but he told Judge Elizabeth Sexton he has lived in Washington state for 15 years. He said he was in DuPage County to look for work.
Sexton set bail at $500,000 on the methamphetamine case. Martines-Corona also was wanted on a fugitive from justice warrant out of Minnesota. Bail on that case also was set at $500,000.
Jackson said Martines-Coronoa is charged with an enhanced drug offense that carries a possible prison term of up to 60 years.
