EDWARDSVILLE — Stretches of a southwestern Illinois highway are being named in honor of a late World War II veteran who held the nation's highest award for valor.

The Illinois Senate has adopted a resolution designating parts of U.S. 67 and current and future portions of Illinois Route 255 the Russell E. Dunham Memorial Highway.

Dunham is an East Carondolet native who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat near Kayserburg, France, in January 1945.

While serving with the Army, Dunham was wounded but still attacked and destroyed three machine gun emplacements, killing seven German soldiers and capturing two more.

Dunham died in 2009.

The resolution honoring him was sponsored by Senators Bill Haine of Alton and Sam McCann of Carlinville.
