Move into a new single-family home in Palatine as soon as September. KF Walter Homes is building this brick and frame home with a three-car garage on W. Dorchester Avenue in that popular Northwest suburb and it is expected to be ready for its family this fall.

Once complete, the home will feature a gourmet island kitchen with stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, granite countertops, a walk-in pantry, eating area and butler's pantry. The family room will also feature hardwood floors but the dining room and den will be carpeted and the first-floor laundry room will feature ceramic tile flooring.

Since the new preference among buyers is for a less formal floor plan, this home will not feature a living room, instead devoting the extra space to a larger family room, with its gas log fireplace, and to a den. The entire first floor will feature 9-foot ceilings.

The home's four carpeted bedrooms will all be located on the second floor, along with two full baths. The deep pour basement will be left unfinished.

Builder Greg Rose of KF Walter Homes offers more details:

What's the hidden gem in this house?

"There is enough space on the first floor to convert the den and half bath into a guest suite or first-floor bedroom."

What would your perfect buyer look like?

"I have been working mainly with people who desire high quality new construction, good schools, a premier commuter location, or any combination thereof. Those searching for the perfect blend of semi-custom construction and affordability seem to gravitate toward KF Walter Homes."

What surprises you about this house?

"I have been surprised by this home's broad appeal to different age groups. It seems to span most of the spectrum. Also, the basement is very large. You could store tons of items and still have room for the kids to run around."

If this house were featured on TV show, which one would it be?

"I could see this house on 'Malcolm in the Middle.' I think they would feature it as a house that the family dreams about buying. Or maybe in one of the last episodes of 'Friends.' I could see this home as the one Chandler and Monica choose to start their new family."

What's the coolest thing about living in this neighborhood?

"Palatine is home to some of the very friendliest people. Combine that with new construction percolating all around this established neighborhood and you have the perfect 'Welcome to the Neighborhood' scenario. Also, the street on which this home will be located is only one block long so automobile traffic is very light."

What's one adjective you'd use to describe the house?

"Smart. It meets the higher demands of today's homebuyer without being frivolous."

Name three plants, flowers or trees in the yard.

"The rear of this property is bordered by a stand of established trees. When this new home is complete, its landscaping package will include viburnum, dwarf lilac and hydrangea plantings. The parkway will have two new trees to compliment the mature neighborhood setting."
