Edwards case continued to Tuesday:

James Edwards is due back in Lake County circuit court Tuesday for a hearing at which prosecutors may ask for dismissal of a murder charge against him. Edwards appeared in Lake County Circuit Judge John Phillips’ courtroom Friday, but his hearing was continued to next week. Edwards was imprisoned in 1996 after he was convicted of slaying Waukegan business owner Fred Reckling, 71. Edwards was convicted of beating Reckling to death, based on a signed confession. Even with the expected dismissal of the murder charge, Edwards will remain in prison for other convictions. Authorities last week said DNA evidence led them to Hezekiah D. Whitfield, 42, of Chicago, who’s been charged with six counts of first-degree murder in the beating death of Reckling in his Grand Appliance store in 1994.
