Indiana woman whose fetus died in suicide try freed

INDIANAPOLIS — A Chinese immigrant has been released on bond after more than a year in an Indianapolis jail on charges that she killed her 33-week-old fetus by eating rat poison.

Thirty-five-year-old Bei Bei Shuai says she is “very happy” to be out of jail Tuesday. Defense attorney Linda Pence says one of Shuai’s first moves will be to call her mother in China.

A judge Friday set a $50,000 bond for Shuai after a state appeals court ruled the case against her wasn’t strong enough to keep her in jail.

Shuai attempted suicide by ingesting rat poison in December 2010. She survived but her baby, who was delivered by cesarean section, died three days later.

Women’s rights groups say her prosecution endangers the rights of pregnant women.
