Des Plaines police say the 44-year-old man who was shot and killed by an officer Sunday tried to run down the two officers conducting a traffic stop. Police said Carlos Salgado would have been charged with attempted murder, possession of a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance had he survived the shooting in a strip mall parking lot Sunday. An attorney representing Salgado&#146;s family filed a lawsuit claiming excessive force was used and subpoenaed police records Wednesday morning. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Suburban mayors tear into Madigan&#146;s pension reform ideas</h3>

Suburban mayors are calling a pension reform proposal by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan a &#147;stealth property tax (increase),&#148; because it would use tax money from municipalities to pay for teachers&#146; pensions. The move could &#147;blow a real sizable chunk out of any budget our size,&#148; said Rolling Meadows Mayor Tom Rooney. The proposal was scheduled for possible debate in committee Wednesday, but that never happened. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Lucky Boys Confusion guitarist dies unexpectedly</h3>

Fans, family and friends are mourning the early death of Lucky Boys Confusion guitarist Joe Sell, a Naperville Central High School graduate, who was 33. Sell had been suffering from pancreas problems a few months ago, but band members did not know what caused his death. Sell was one of the original members of the bang, which began playing in the suburbs in 1997 and later signed a record deal and played nationwide. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Mineola Hotel in Fox Lake to shut down Sunday</h3>

Structural safety concerns are forcing the owner of the historic Mineola Hotel in Fox Lake to shut the hotel down indefinitely after the close of business Sunday night. The 128-year-old wooden structure, known as the &#147;grand Lady of the Lakes,&#148; learned of its fate about two weeks after its owner put the hotel up for auction on eBay. <h3 class="briefHead">Naperville police chief retires</h3>

Naperville officials said goodbye to retiring police Chief David Dial last night. Several hundred people, including area police officials, residents and friends, celebrated his retirement from a 45-year law enforcement career, the last 22 in Naperville. City officials retired his badge #1 and City Manager Doug Krieger gave Dial a pair of ragged cargo shorts that he had ridiculed Krieger for wearing during a golf outing years ago. &#147;I can honestly say no city manager has ever given me his shorts before,&#148; Dial said. As Bears coaches and management continue to claim they are happy with the state of the offensive line, the man who relies on those front five the most is the only one speaking up about his concerns. After an event at a South Side school earlier this week Jay Cutler made it clear he still worries for his safety. &#147;You know, the offensive line is definitely going to be a concern, and seeing where those guys are going to fit in and seeing what five we go with,&#148; Cutler said.
