Driver in DUI crash that killed 5 teens appeals sentencing

An Aurora woman who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing five Oswego teens in a 2007 drunken driving crash is appealing her sentence. Sandra Vasquez, 28, is arguing that a state statute cited in her case is unconstitutionally vague. Vasquez was trying to give eight teens a ride home from an underage drinking party when she crashed into a pole. Full story.

Arlington Heights lowers downtown worker parking fees

People who work in downtown Arlington Heights will be able to buy monthly parking permits for designated lots and garage spots for $15, half the usual price, the village board decided last night. The board also decided that free on-street parking should remain at just two hours to make more of it available to shoppers, while expanding the time limit in garages for shoppers. Full story.

Chemical mishap kills 98 acres of grass in Addison

An herbicide vendor sold the Addison Park District “the wrong application,” which was sprayed over 98 acres of parkland, killing the grass. The park district is now reseeding the land and the costs will be covered by insurance for the vendor. The new grass is expected to sprout by the end of the summer or early fall. “We are deeply concerned and don't take this lightly, but the sales rep came forward and said they want to make this right,” said Executive Director Mark McKinnon. $200 million cargo facility at O'Hare could add thousands of jobs

Plans for a $200 million air cargo handling facility are in the works at O'Hare International Airport. The project is expected to generate 1,200 construction jobs and 1,200 jobs at the facility. O'Hare is the No. 1 U.s. air cargo gateway for imports from mainland China and handles more than 25 percent of U.S. total exports, according to aviation Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino. Cops: Elgin man threw roommate's dog against wall, killing animal

A 20-year-old Elgin man is accused of throwing his roommate's Chihuahua at a wall over the weekend, which killed the animal, police said. Oscar Guerrero also faces underage drinking, resisting arrest and battery charges. Police said Guerrero grabbed the dog by the neck and threw it against the wall when his roommate refused to go into the basement to take photos. Full story.

Few details of Des Plaines police shooting, but suspect had extensive record

Police have released few details about what happened during the roughly 10 minutes between when an officer pulled over 44-year-old Carlos Salgado Sunday afternoon and when Des Plaines shot him dead Sunday afternoon. Salgado died of a single gunshot wound to the armpit area in the middle of a strip mall parking lot. Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting. Salgado's criminal record included multiple convictions on drug and weapons offenses, according to court records. Full story.

Man killed in Elk Grove Village crash

A man in his 50s was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Busse Road in Elk Grove Village Monday afternoon, according to police. The driver crashed into a parked construction vehicle in the area of Estes Avenue at about 2:15 p.m. Police said the area where the crash occurred was a posted work zone. Full story.

Police are on the scene of an accident on I-88 between Route 59 and Eola Road. Construction continues on Pingree Road between Cog Circle and Grandview Drive in Crystal Lake That roadway is scheduled to be closed until mid-October, ane people can use Route 31 between US-14 and Crystal Lake Avenue. Illinois, Northwestern to host ACC/Big Ten challenges

Illinois and Northwestern will both have home men's basketball games in November's ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Big Ten announced Monday. The Fighting Illini will host Georgia Tech on Nov. 28. Illinois has won six of its previous seven games against the Yellow Jackets, including its most recent matchup in 2001. Northwestern will host Maryland on Nov. 27. Dempster blows his win, but Cubs keep theirs

Ryan Dempster was sailing along last night with all the run support he appeared to need. His teammates gave him 4 runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. What could go wrong? Plenty. Patience apparently enough of a virtue for White Sox

Manager Robin Ventura is under no pressure whatsoever to bench struggling players, chastise them in the media or call for wholesale changes. Even if Ventura was feeling some heat, he still would be more likely to play the patience card. It's in his nature.
