Prospect Heights mayor wins big at Derby party

By Deborah Donovan

Prospect Heights Mayor Nick Helmer is new to horse racing, but there he was at a Kentucky Derby party last week at the new Off Track Betting facility in his city.

Somehow he chose the horse in the 19th position for a $5 win bet in the big race. As all race fans know now, that just happened to be I’ll Have Another, who won at 16-1 odds, earning Helmer $80.

Helmer was more confident congratulating winners of the hat contest held during the party at Players Pub & Grill.

Those winners are Teri Lind, Glen Ellyn, first place; Sarah Levee, Prospect Heights, second place; and Amy Davini, Prospect Heights, third place.
