South School in Des Plaines will unveil a mural Tuesday, May 8, to coincide with the Academic Celebration and Community Open House.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 1535 Everett St., Des Plaines.
Mural artist Beth Shadur has been in residency at South School for four weeks, thanks for a grant from the Illinois Arts Council and the PTO. The impact of her classes for students and staff have culminated in a mural painted by fourth- and fifth-graders -- a large-scale mural that reflects the unique character and population of South students.
Shadur immersed the students students in the collaborative process of designing, creating and imaging and they learned the skills involved in mural painting, color study, drawing, scale and design. Shadur also provided watercolor workshops for all other grades.
The mural will be dedicated at 2:15 p.m., May 11.
