Maize pitches Leyden to victory


Leyden improved to 20-5 as DePaul-bound senior Morgan Maize struck out 12 and defeated Morton 8-1 in the West suburban Gold contest.

Top hitters for the Eagles were senior April Markowski (2-for-5), junior Denise Moran (3-for-4, double), senior Dana Sullivan (1-for-3, double) and senior Melissa Dziadosz (1-for-3, double).

Glenbrook North 3, Maine West 2: Maine West (16-9, 7-1) lost for the first time in the CSL North as the host Spartans rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Warriors junior Ariel Valles (12-6) threw a complete game.

"Ariel did a great job on the mound and worked hard the entire game," said West coach Amy Gonazales. "The girls did a great job today we executed on offense and made plays on defense."

Abbey Herling (2-for-3, double, RBI), Renee Pond (2-for-3, double, 1 run) and Holly Wengerski (1-for-2, 1 run) led the offense for Maine West.
