Yes, that fireball you saw last night was a meteor

That large, green fireball in the sky that was reported Wednesday evening is a confirmed meteor, according to lunarmeteoritehunters.com.

The website, which tracks meteor sightings from around the globe, said the green fireball was detected over Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan at about 8:25 p.m.

Meteor trackers from the Chicagoland suburbs who saw the space rock said it was an extremely bright yellow/green color with a sparkling tail.

A man from Glencoe said on the website that he was facing east when he saw it, and that it was brighter than the planet Venus in the sky, while another man from Arlington Heights posted on the site that it had no sound but was very bright, like a firework.

A third male, this one from North Chicago, said on the website the meteor was traveling northwest across the sky, was a green and blue hue, but “it was a sight to see truly amazing.”

Officials from the National Weather Service said they have received calls about the meteor, but could not confirm the actual sighting. However, officials said conditions were cool and clear and that a meteor could be visible if one streaked by.
