Deep thoughts on an appetizing spring

Wild mushrooms, slab crappie, and walleyes tossed in for good measure. With those wonderful elements about to fall into our laps, we know that spring is here.

The only major fly in the ointment is a the lack of water, especially on the Fox Chain, where water levels at some areas are down 2-3 feet. Caution is advised to boating anglers.

Fishing report

Lake Michigan: Smelt are almost nonexistent for the regular shore crowed. Perching is slow with hopes of a more mild weekend, which would mean less wind and slightly warmer water temperatures. Coho salmon action has picked up for boaters working out of Waukegan in 55 feet.

Fox Chain: Water levels are very low. Boaters need to be careful on Grass Lake, Marie and Petite Lake. Crappie action is decent in some of the side channels on Fox Lake.

Fox River: Water levels way down. Channel catfish action better than smallmouth activity.

Local ponds: Have your trout stamps ready for inspection if you plan to try your luck for spring rainbow trout at a variety of locations in Cook, Lake and McHenry Counties.
