Woman admits trying to pass stolen check at Highwood bank

The second of two Chicago women accused of trying to cash a stolen check for $43,000 pleaded guilty to forgery Monday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Alicia Gaddy, 42, was placed on probation for two years and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Turk said Gaddy and Donna Pierce, also 42, went into the Leumi Bank on the 1800 block of Greenbay Road in Highwood around 2 p.m. on Jan. 25, 2010.

Both went to a teller’s station and gave the teller a check for $43,000 made out to Gaddy and drawn on the account of a Chicago attorney.

The women asked for the entire amount in cash, Turk said, but the teller became suspicious and called the attorney.

The attorney said the check the women had was one of three he had reported stolen, so the teller called Highwood police.

The two were arrested inside the bank without incident.

Pierce pleaded guilty to forgery July 14 and received the same sentence.

Both women could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted after a trial.
