Indians’ Gomez gives up his first runs of spring

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Cleveland’s Jeanmar Gomez gave up his first runs of spring training as the Chicago Cubs beat the Indians 6-2 Sunday.

Alfonso Soriano had three RBIs, including a two-run homer for Chicago.

Gomez allowed three runs over five innings. The right-hander is competing with Kevin Slowey and David Huff for the final rotation spot. He walked three, struck out three and has a 1.69 ERA in five outings.

Chicago’s Joe Mather had two doubles and is hitting .432. He also made a nice catch near the warning track in center to rob Asdrubal Cabrera of extra bases.

Cubs starter Rodrigo Lopez gave up two runs, two hits and two walks in the first inning. He worked 4 1-3 innings, walking three.
