Barreiro wins Kane District 2 Democratic primary

Theresa Barreiro of Aurora won the Democratic nomination for Kane County Board District 2 Tuesday.

With all precincts counted, Barreiro had 65 percent of the vote.

She ran against Art Velasquez of North Aurora.

Barreiro joked during the campaign that the two candidates should have called each other before seeking the nomination, as they are longtime family friends, and her mother has worked on political campaigns with Velasquez.

Barreiro will face Republican Sal Abbate of North Aurora in the general election in November.

The winner will replace the area’s current representative, Republican Jim Mitchell of North Aurora, who did not seek re-election.

Barreiro is a client services and marketing assistant, an Aurora Township precinct committeeman, and has volunteered at Annunciation Catholic elementary school and the Marywood Community Center.

New parties and independent candidates have until June 25 to file for the general election
