Abbate wins Republican nomination for Kane District 2

Sal Abbate of North Aurora will be the Republican’s nominee for the Kane County Board District 2 general election in November.

With all precincts counted, Abbate defeated Will Passalaqua, also of North Aurora. Abbate had 55 percent of the vote.

Abbate will face Democrat Theresa Barreiro of Aurora in November.

He is a regional sales manager, and an Aurora Township precinct committeeman. He was also an Addison Township precinct committeeman in the late 1990s when he lived in DuPage County. The area’s current representative, Republican Jim Mitchell of North Aurora, did not run for re-election.

Under redistricting, the new District 2 looks like a squiggly jigsaw puzzle piece. It includes part of Aurora, a town that is 41 percent Hispanic, and North Aurora, which is 84 percent white non-Hispanic.

New parties and independent candidates have until June 25 to file for the general election.
