Daily Herald named among '10 Newspapers That Do It Right'
The Daily Herald has been named one of the country's “10 Newspapers That Do It Right” by Editor & Publisher magazine, the newspaper industry's leading trade publication.
The national recognition praises newspapers that demonstrate “flexibility, creativity, sound judgment, and commitment to high-quality journalism in some unique manner.”
The Daily Herald was selected from a field of more than 100 newspapers, including all of the nation's top publications, Editor & Publisher Managing Editor Kristina Ackerman said.
The Editor & Publisher staff was impressed with how the Daily Herald efficiently combined its online and editorial departments — to speed up and smooth out the process of posting news stories on dailyherald.com — and developed a Web-first mentality in the newsroom.
“What we liked about the Herald was that (the leadership) was seeing that something wasn't working, and made changes so that it did work,” Ackerman said.
Senior Vice President and Editor John Lampinen said the changes have improved the quality of the newspaper, resulted in fewer reader complaints, and led to the successful implementation of the online Subscriber Total Access service, a program deeply discounted for Daily Herald print newspaper subscribers that offers access to special events; iPad, iPhone and Android apps; an online edition of the Daily Herald and other content and services.
Having tripled the number of multimedia assets compared to just a year ago, the Daily Herald now better serves its readers, Lampinen said.
“(The recognition) is a reflection of a dedicated and innovative staff that amazes me by its ability to adapt to meet the challenges of new technology and maximize its opportunities,” he said. “It's that great work that enables us to continue our commitment to deliver the news and information our readers need and want.”
This marks the second time the Daily Herald has made this Top 10 list. The Daily Herald and its Spanish-language newspaper, Reflejos, also received the award in 2005.
“Innovation has become a way of business life for the Daily Herald — from new niche product development to the Business Ledger, Reflejos and the Subscriber Total Access paid content model. The results are gratifying, and being recognized by Editor & Publisher magazine as one of the ‘10 Newspapers That Do It Right' is just the latest example,” said Publisher and CEO Doug Ray. “This recognition is sought after by all newspaper companies, and we are proud to have been selected.”
