1 dead, 2 injured in accident near NIU campus

DEKALB -- Authorities say one man is dead and two others injured after a Sunday morning accident near the campus of Northern Illinois University.

According to police and fire officials, the driver, a 21-year-old DeKalb man, was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday. Two other DeKalb residents were airlifted from the scene of the wreck in DeKalb.

Authorities say the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and rear-ended a stopped or slow-moving semitrailer.

Police say open containers of alcohol were found in the car and are believed to have played a role in the crash.

None of the people in the vehicle are believed to be NIU students..
