Love is opening your heart to animals in need

By Ellaine Kiriluk

The Buddy Beat

Love is “a deep devotion or affection … for the sake of … in loving consideration of … affection, devotion, attachment and fondness,” according to Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary.

Love is watching your 17-year-old Buddy Foundation cat still enjoying life by sitting in the dining room and “bopping” the dog on the head as he walks by, just for the fun of it.

Love is your dog tolerating what the cat does.

Love is finding your dog and cat curled up beside each other, sound asleep on the living room couch.

Love is your friend adopting a 9-year-old Samoyed because, as she said, “Age doesn’t mean anything.” She named him “Powder” for the sugar.

Love is opening your heart and home to a shelter dog who may need to be shown what it means to be loved.

Love is agreeing with the American Humane Association’s description of the “Perfect Dog Owner” (found in “Is a Dog Right for You?”)

You may be the perfect dog owner if you:

Ÿ Believe caring for a dog for 15 years does not seem like a lifetime.

Ÿ Look forward to big, wet kisses when you come home each day.

Ÿ Like sharing your house with someone who sheds, tracks dirt occasionally and possibly drools.

Ÿ Want to take care of someone every day.

Ÿ Love a playmate who likes to chase balls and drag off shoes.

Ÿ Would like to spend your extra money on pet food, toys, veterinary care, chew bones and more chew bones.

Ÿ Want someone to adore you even on a bad hair day.

Ÿ Believe that spaying and neutering pets will help solve the pet overpopulation problem.

Ÿ Can’t imagine leaving your devoted pet behind when you move.

Ÿ Want to keep an ID tag on your pets, so they can always get back to you no matter what.

Ÿ Enjoy unconditional love and constant companionship.”

Love is the word that describes volunteers of the Buddy Foundation.
