Cops: Willowbrook teen staged own kidnapping

A Willowbrook teen accused of staging his own kidnapping told police he did it to find out if his mother “cared for him,” a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Bail was set at $30,000 for Dorian Ford, 19, of the 10S600 block of Ivy Lane. He is charged with felony disorderly conduct.

Authorities said Ford borrowed a phone and called his mother Tuesday saying he was being held in lieu of a $1,000 ransom.

The DuPage County sheriff's office spent roughly 12 hours investigating while Ford's mother tried to put together the money, Assistant State's Attorney Kevin Laude said.

After interviewing several potential witnesses, police said they eventually located Ford and determined the report was false.

“He admitted later he merely wanted to know if his mom cared for him,” Laude said in bond court Wednesday.

Judge Brian Diamond set bail at $30,000 for Ford, who is on probation after being convicted of robbery last year.

Ford told the judge he is unemployed and lives with his mother. He is scheduled to appear Feb. 23 in front of Judge Blanche Hill Fawell.
