O’Brien lauds recruits sticking with Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — New Penn State coach Bill O’Brien is giving credit to recruits who stuck to their commitments to the Nittany Lions.

A 19-member class announced Wednesday includes a highly rated receiver who could contribute right away in Penn State’s revamped offense. O’Brien is finishing up his duties as offensive coordinator for the Patriots, who play in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Penn State lost six verbal commitments since November, when authorities filed child sex abuse charges against a retired assistant coach. O’Brien’s predecessor, the late Joe Paterno, was fired in the aftermath of the charges.

O’Brien has been on the job for just a month. He credits his assistants for keeping the majority of the class intact while targeting new signees who he says are the “right fit” for Penn State.
