Sky opens WNBA season May 19

Head coach Pokey Chatman of the Chicago Sky will be back for her second WNBA season when the Sky begins play in May. She’ll need guards Courtney Vandersloot (21) and Epiphany Prince (10) to help run the offense through all-stars Sylvia Fowles and Swin Cash.

Will seven turn out to be the Sky’s lucky number?

The Chicago Sky, the only WNBA franchise yet to make the playoffs, will open its seventh regular season on the road May 19 against the Washington Mystics.

With all-star center Sylvia Fowles and newly acquired veteran forward Swin Cash expected to carry the scoring load throughout the 34-game season, head coach Pokey Chatman’s team will welcome the Indiana Fever for the home opener. Led by league MVP and former Stevenson High School star Tamika Catchings, the Fever will be play the Sky May 25 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

Weekends will be busy at Allstate Arena in 2012 as 10 of the 17 regular-season Sky home games will be played on a Friday (7), Saturday (1) or Sunday (2).

Highlights include a visit by Diana Taurasi and the up-tempo Phoenix Mercury on June 29. Naperville Central and Olympics star Candace Parker won’t come to Chicago with her Los Angeles Sparks team until Sept. 2, followed by the 2011 WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx with Maya Moore on Sept. 11.

This season the league will take an Olympics break from July 14-Aug. 15 to accommodate WNBA players competing at the Olympics in London. The Sky will resume post-Olympic action against the Atlanta Dream on Aug. 17.
