McHenry Co. sheriff's sergeant charged with sexual assault
A 10-year veteran of the McHenry County sheriff's office has been charged with criminal sexual assault, authorities said Sunday.
Sgt. Gregory Pyle, 36, surrendered to Illinois State Police investigators Saturday night after being charged with 10 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, police said.
The allegations were reported to the sheriff's office Friday night for what police described at the time as a "domestic issue." Pyle, of Crystal Lake, immediately was placed on administrative leave.
"We are deeply concerned any time a department member has violated the honor of this organization," Sheriff Keith Nygren said in a written statement.
The charges, which indicate the victim was less than 13 years old, carry a mandatory sentence of between six and 30 years for each count if Pyle is convicted.
Illinois State Police investigators are handling the case along with the McHenry County state's attorney's office.
"Once the sheriff's office was made aware of these allegations, they immediately contacted state police to investigate," Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.
Bond said the victim and Pyle knew each other, but she did not have any other details about the case.
"We don't know the extent of it at this point," Bond said Sunday night.
Pyle is free after posting 10 percent of $200,000 bail shortly after midnight Sunday. He is due in court Jan. 27.
